Week Eight | Nanotech + Art

This is not my first time having a touch on nanotechnology. I learnt about the bucky-ball and knew the experiment of writing 25,000 pages of Encyclopedia on a pin head when I was in middle school. I  was amazed by them but never connected them to the concept of nanotechnology, and no one taught me to. The first time I saw the word nanotechnology was in advertisements, while, ironically, I took a sceptical attitude towards the advertisements. What indeed was this "nanotechnology"? I doubted. It sounded like a term created by advertisers. Would it do any harm to me? I could not sense it with my eyes, hands, or other organs. Why should I trust it?

This is definitely the largest problem nanotechnology faces now. The science changed our life and our thought patterns in many ways. But because of these great changes and more potential changes, it becomes hard for people to embrace some improvements nanotechnology brings. For instance, the scale of nanotechnology itself is a shock to many people. It changes our way of thinking that seeing is believing. Thus our conscious and subconscious mind is challenged and gradually shifted. Therefore, its applications to all walks of life become somewhat hard to understand to some people. This is why nanotechnology often meets with resistance in society. As mentioned in The Nanomeme Syndrome: Blurring of fact & fiction in the construction of a new science, the resistance will gravely affect the development of nanotechnology.

We've found many fields that nanotechnology can be applied to, including medicine, cosmetics, and material engineering. At the same time when we make an effort to popularize nanotechnology, we should also evaluate its risks. In this way, we will become abler to confirm the public that the great improvement nanotechnology brings will not come with those risks that are plaguing them now.
