Week Nine | Space + Art
As a student who once majored in astrophysics, I went on many field trips, observing the night sky. I understand why the ancient people were so fascinated by the sky. It was something beautiful but we knew nothing about. I find that it is easy for people to connect the space with art as well, probably because they are both mysterious. Many art and media works described astronomy and human's relationship with the space in the future in detail. For instance, the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey can be called as the forefather of the all the science fiction movies about the space in present-day world.
People are attracted by this kind of movies, just as people in the late 19th century were captivated by the Space Race. However, as we knew more about the space during this process, many creatures sacrificed for our thirst for knowledge and for our victory in the race. When we delineate the beauty of the space in art works, we may think of its mystery and the horror it brought to us as well. Art works may remind us how many lives were swallowed by the endless darkness.

As long as there remains something unknown about the space, we will keep imagining, creating all forms of art works on it, and making efforts to approach the truth. The following two pictures are from the official website of NASA. People can easily download photos taken by telescope from their website, which is a good way for NASA to motivate the public to know more about the space, not as science, but as a kind of art. This is a process we do encourage a lot.
